BHP Group Ltd - Melbourne, Australia-based diversified miner - Rolls out Australia's first brand new purpose-built battery-electric locomotives in the Port Hedland. The two BELs, developed with Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania-based Westinghouse Air Brake Technologies Corp, will be trialled on one of BHP's iron ore rail routes between its Pilbara mines and Port Hedland operations. Each locomotive houses a seven megawatt hour battery and uses regenerative braking to recapture energy on downhill runs. BHP says it supports the company's efforts to cut Scope 1 and 2 emissions across its iron ore rail network. Commissioning is underway ahead of track trials to test performance in live operations.
