(Alliance News) - BHP Group Ltd on Friday announced changes to its senior leadership team as the company moves to strengthen operational performance and regional oversight across its global portfolio.
The Melbourne, Australia-based diversified miner said Chief Operating Officer Edgar Basto, who joined the company in 2003, will transition to the newly created role of chief enterprise performance officer.
Reporting to the chief executive officer, he will retain accountability for health, safety and security and the BHP Operating System, while also taking on responsibility for contractor safety and embedding operating discipline across the organisation.
BHP said the president, Americas role will be split into two.
Jessica Farrell has been appointed president, North America effective July 1.
Farrell, currently vice president for Innovation and previously Western Australia Nickel Asset president, has more than 20 years of operational and leadership experience across multiple commodities and regions.
She will also act as president, South America while recruitment for that position continues.
BHP added that Geraldine Slattery will continue as president, Australia and will assume responsibility for Copper South Australia, consolidating all Australian operating assets under her leadership.
Incoming CEO Brandon Craig said: "These new appointments ensure that we continue to build organisational capacity, with the right mix of skills, experience and perspectives to deliver BHP's strategy and pursue our growth agenda.
"Our operating environment is increasingly complex, but also rich in opportunity for companies that are best able to positively engage stakeholders, deploy capital to the right opportunities in a disciplined way and deliver safe, reliable operational performance"
Craig is president of BHP Americas and is set to take over as CEO on July 1, as announced by the company in March.
Shares in BHP closed 1.7% lower at AUD58.52 in Sydney on Thursday.
