(Alliance News) - BHP Group Ltd has received its first environmental approval for the expansion of the Escondida copper mine in Chile, Bloomberg reported Tuesday.
The Melbourne, Australia-based diversified miner was granted approval by the Antofagasta Environmental Assessment Commission to proceed with early stage works involving sulphide leaching and electricity upgrades.
The Bloomberg report cited a BHP spokesperson.
The approved work will cost the company around USD1.3 billion, and forms part of a broader expansion project worth up to USD14.7 billion.
BHP shares were down 2.0% at AUD58.82 each in Sydney on Tuesday afternoon.
