IN BRIEF: AstraZeneca wins US nod for Etcamah breast cancer combo

7th Sep 2026 01:08

AstraZeneca PLC - Cambridge, England-based pharmaceuticals firm - Welcomes the US Food & Drug Administration's accelerated approval of Etcamah for use alongside a cyclin‑dependent kinase 4 and 6 inhibitor, a type of medicine that slows cancer cell growth, in adults with advanced hormone‑driven breast cancer. Says Etcamah, which blocks the effect of estrogen on tumour cells, is cleared for patients who develop a mutation in the estrogen receptor 1 gene, a change that can make standard hormone treatment stop working. AstraZeneca says the decision is supported by Serena-6 phase three trial showing the combination keeps the disease from worsening for longer than current first‑line therapy. The firm adds that safety findings are in line with what is already known about the medicines used. Etcamah is also approved in more than 30 countries. Read More

IN BRIEF: Hutchmed "thrilled" by positive phase 3 trial results

1st Sep 2026 13:37

Hutchmed China Ltd - Hong Kong-based biopharmaceutical company - Announces "positive high-level results" from the Sanovo China phase 3 trial of Orpathys plus Tagrisso in treatment-naive patients with locally advanced or metastatic non-small cell lung cancer, whose tumours harbour epidermal growth factor receptor mutation and MET overexpression. Orpathys, or savolitinib, combined with Tagrisso or osimertinib, showed "a statistically significant and highly clinically meaningful improvement in progression-free survival" in the high MET and intention-to-treat patient populations, compared with Tagrisso alone. Hutchmed adds that "the combination also demonstrated a very encouraging clinical benefit in [the secondary endpoint of] overall survival" in both populations. Hutchmed is jointly developing Orpathys with AstraZeneca, which is also commercialising the treatment. Read More
