UK WINNERS & LOSERS: Broker Upgrades Lift Standard Chartered

LONDON (Alliance News) - The following stocks are amongst the biggest risers and fallers within the main London indices midday Wednesday.

FTSE 100 WINNERS

Standard Chartered, up 6.4%. The emerging markets bank has been upgraded by Bernstien to Outperform from Underperform, and by Barclays to Overweight from Equal Weight.

AstraZeneca, up 1.3%. The pharmaceutical giant said it had received positive top-line results from Phase III studies into investigative drug PT003 for the treatment of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.

Land Securities, up 1.1%, and Hammerson, up 0.9%. The real estate investors have been initiated at Buy by Panmure Gordon.

FTSE 100 LOSERS

Smiths Group, down 1.1%. The engineering company reported a slight drop in pretax profit in the first half of its financial year, as the strength of the pound weighed on translated overseas revenue and its detection business continued to struggle, but the company expects to report an improved performance excluding foreign exchange movements in the second half of the year.

FTSE 250 WINNERS

RPC Group, up 2.0%. Jefferies has initiated the plastics company with a Buy rating and and 685.00 pence price target. The stock currently trades at 581.00 pence.

Thomas Cook, down 3.8%. Morgan Stanley has reduced the travel operator to Equal-Weight from Overweight.

Esure Group, down 3.5%. Canaccord has cut the insurer to Hold from Buy.

Bank of Georgia Holdings, down 2.5%. UBS has cut the bank to Neutral from Buy.

Bwin.Party Digital Entertainment, down 0.9%. Citigroup has cut the online gaming company's price target to 65p from 80p. The stock currently trades at 81.15p.

AIM ALL-SHARE WINNERS

Xtract Resources, up 78%. The company said it has discovered a major gold-bearing vein at the Chepica gold and copper mine project in Chile. Xtract said the vein, found in the Salvadori prospect at the project, has a true width of 4 metres and said 200 metres of strike-length is currently visible on the surface.

Camco Clean Energy, up 14%. The company said REDT, in which it holds a 49% stake, has been awarded a EUR400,000 grant by the Energy and Environmental Partnership for Southern and East Africa to develop and install a hybrid energy storage platform in South Africa.

Eurasia Mining, up 7.4%. The Russian platinum miner said it has made further progress on securing the mining licence for the West Kytlim alluvial platinum project.

Stellar Resources, up 7.3%. The participants in the Horse Hill prospect in Surrey reported a further analysis undertaken on the site has increased the potential oil pay. UK Oil & Gas Investments said testing on the Horse Hill-1 well carried out by NUTECH, located in the Weald Basin, has identified a further 407 net feet of potential oil pay calculated from electric logs within limestones and claystones in the Kimmeridge Clay, Oxford Clay and Middle Lias formations. Stellar Resources holds a 10% interest in the Horse Hill Developments, which owns a 65% stake in the prospect.

AIM ALL-SHARE LOSERS

Synety Group, down 32%. The cloud-based software company raised funds in a discounted placing and posted a widened pretax loss for 2014 as it continued to ramp up investments. It said it conditionally has raised GBP2.8 million through the placing of 3.13 million shares at 90 pence, and plans to raise up to a further GBP750,000 through the open offer of 834,028 shares at the same price. The company's shares currently trade at 93.00p.

Stilo International, down 16%. The company reported a drop in sales and earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation in 2014, due to a reduction in orders for a software product and the suspension of a major conversion project by one of its customers. Sales fell to GBP1.26 million, from GBP1.5 million in 2013, while earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation dropped to GBP108,000 from GBP238,000. Pretax profit declined to GBP95,000 from GBP153,000.
