Small-cap and AIM movers in focus:
----------
Zenith Energy Ltd, up 9.2% at 4.15 pence, 12-month range 2.20p-10.50p. The energy production and development company appoints former US secretary of state Mike Pompeo and his advisory firm, CNQ Global Advisors, as strategic advisers in connection with a USD573 million international arbitration claim against Tunisia. The proceedings are being pursued by Zenith's UK subsidiaries before the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes under a bilateral investment treaty between the UK and Tunisia. Pompeo, who served as US secretary of state from 2018 to 2021 and CIA director from 2017 to 2018, will provide strategic and geopolitical advice alongside CNQ's team of former senior US government officials and international affairs specialists.
----------
Kendrick Resources PLC, up 8.3% at 5.25 pence, 12-month range 0.23p-10.50p. The mineral exploration and development company reports further positive preliminary portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) results from its reverse circulation drilling programme at the Teufelskuppe Carbonatite Complex in Namibia. All 11 drill holes analysed return light rare earth oxide (LREO) intercepts across significant mineralised widths, with notable results including grades of 4.62% over 20 metres, 4.22% over 40 metres and 3.41% over 54 metres, based on a 3% LREO cut-off. Kendrick says the results demonstrate continuity of high-grade mineralisation across the carbonatite bodies, while applying lower cut-off grades of 2.5% or 2.0% indicates substantially wider mineralised intervals. The company adds that the extensive mineralised widths suggest potential for additional bulk tonnage, which will be considered during resource estimation.
----------
Mkango Magnetic Materials Ltd, up 11% at 29.20 pence, 12-month range 26.18p-72.24p. The rare earth magnet producer announces positive results from an independent pre-feasibility study for the expansion of HyProMag USA's rare earth magnet manufacturing operations, outlining an incremental post-tax net present value of USD1.85 billion to USD2.06 billion and a post-tax internal rate of return of 31% to 36%. The study, conducted by PegasusTSI and BBA USA, supports the development of three additional production plants and a centralised manufacturing and finishing hub, alongside HyProMag USA's planned facility in Northlake, Texas. The expansion would increase total annual saleable material production capacity to approximately 6,000 metric tonnes by 2034, nearly quadrupling the planned Northlake capacity. The Northlake facility is currently in detailed engineering, with initial commissioning expected in mid-2028. The study's financial projections cover only the proposed expansion facilities and exclude the value of the Northlake plant.
----------
Shoe Zone PLC, down 22% at 57.50p, 12-month range 35.00p-83.00p. The footwear retailer expects to swing to an adjusted pretax loss of around GBP1.0 million for the 53 weeks ended October 3 from a profit of GBP2.4 million a year earlier, in line with management expectations. Revenue falls 4.5% to GBP142.4 million from GBP149.1 million, reflecting weaker consumer confidence and a reduction in its store estate to 251 shops from 269. Product margin improves to 63.1% from 61.0%, while net cash rises to GBP15.1 million from GBP5.9 million. Shoe Zone expects to pay no final dividend and remains cautious about its near-term outlook, citing subdued trading conditions following a slower-than-expected start to the autumn and winter season. It also warns that rising container and fuel costs, alongside sterling weakness against the dollar, could put pressure on future margins. Chair Charles Smith describes the year as "challenging", particularly in the first half, as weak consumer confidence, persistent inflation and pressure on disposable incomes weigh on discretionary spending. However, he notes that sales were stronger during the warm summer and back-to-school season, when customers had a clear reason to buy.
