FTSE 100 & 250 movers in focus:
----------
AstraZeneca PLC, down 6.0% at 11,873.00 pence, 12-month range 9,892.00p-15,732.00p. AstraZeneca and New Jersey-based peer Bristol Myers Squibb have held talks about a potential merger that could value the combined group at around USD400 billion, the Financial Times reports, citing people familiar with the matter. The report says a deal could materialise in the near future, although there is no certainty it will proceed. If completed, the combination would create the world's fourth-largest pharmaceutical company. The report follows AstraZeneca's direct listing in New York in June, which fuelled speculation about a possible shift in the drugmaker's US strategy.
----------
Persimmon PLC, up 4.6% at 1,158.00 pence, 12-month range 947.40p-1,552.00p. Housebuilders gain as traders scale back expectations for further Bank of England rate hikes after hopes of a US-Iran agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz pushed Brent crude below USD84 a barrel, easing concerns over energy-driven inflation. With the UK particularly exposed to higher energy prices, markets now see less than a 25% chance of a BoE rate hike in September and around a 75% probability of a move in November, according to Bloomberg.
----------
Clarkson PLC, up 7.6% at 5,090.00 pence, 12-month range 3,365.00p-5,485.00p. Reports record first-half performance as underlying pretax profit jumps 56% to GBP61.5 million from GBP39.4 million a year earlier, with statutory pretax profit rising to GBP55.6 million from GBP37.5 million. The shipping services firm says geopolitical disruption, including turbulence in the Strait of Hormuz, reshaped global trade flows, boosting freight rates and hedging activity, helping its Broking division deliver record operating profit of GBP64.8 million, up from GBP41.8 million. Clarkson raises its interim dividend to 35p from 33p and now expects full-year results to be materially ahead of market expectations, no longer anticipating earnings to be weighted to the second half.
----------
Plus500 Ltd, down 1.8% at 3,840.00 pence, 12-month range 2,874.00p-5,535.00p. Launches Single Stock Futures in the US, expanding customer access to CME Group-listed contracts. The fintech trading platform says the new offering includes Micro Single Stock Futures, allowing customers to gain exposure to leading US stocks through futures contracts with lower initial margin requirements, leverage and the ability to trade outside standard market hours. Plus500 says it plans to broaden the range of contracts over time based on customer demand, liquidity and market conditions as it continues to expand its US business.
----------
easyJet PLC, up 2.8% at 647.80 pence, 12-month range 332.60p-683.80p. Extends the deadline for Castlelake to announce a firm takeover offer until Friday, aligning it with Apollo Management X's deadline under the UK Takeover Code. The airline says the UK Takeover Panel has approved moving Castlelake's put up or shut up deadline from Monday to Friday. Last month, easyJet agreed in principle to recommend Apollo's 715 pence-per-share cash proposal, valuing the airline at around GBP5.7 billion, and said it was no longer minded to support Castlelake's lower 690p-per-share proposal.
