(Alliance News) - Hutchmed China Ltd on Friday announced regulatory approval for fanregratinib in China for the treatment of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma, a rare cancer that develops in the bile ducts.
The Hong Kong-based biopharmaceutical company said the China National Medical Products Administration had approved its new drug, which will be marketed under the brand name Atled, for the treatment of adults with advanced, metastatic or unresectable intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma.
Acting Chief Executive Officer and Chief Financial Officer of Hutchmed Johnny Cheng said: "This approval unlocks an important new treatment alternative for a substantial population of pretreated advanced intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma patients. We are fully prepared to leverage our established commercial infrastructure to bring this precision medicine to patients as rapidly as possible."
The approval was supported by data from the clinical trial carried out in China which showed "a strong, clinically meaningful response," said the company. Around 43% of the patients in the sample responded to the treatment with a median time of response of 1.4 months after starting the medication.
Hutchmed shares rose 1.0% to 184.35 pence in London on Friday morning.
