Its end-August factsheet shows average annual outperformance of 2.66% against its benchmark over 10 years, with a total share price return of 137% versus 85% for the index.

Negative sentiment towards the UK weighs on valuations, despite its many growing businesses. UK shares are cheap relative to peers, particularly medium-sized and smaller companies. The government appears to recognise the problem, with initiatives underway aimed at increasing ownership of UK shares and the capital available to UK businesses. A shift in investor attitudes towards UK shares could have a disproportionately large impact on MRC's returns.

MRC targets long-term capital growth from UK medium-sized and smaller companies, and dividend growth at least matching inflation over five to ten years. It uses long-term borrowing to increase potential returns.
