(Alliance News) - UK retail sales rebounded in August, while sales also increased over the latest three-month period, figures from the Office for National Statistics showed on Friday.
Retail sales volumes rose 0.5% month-on-month in August, reversing a 0.5% fall in July and beating the FXStreet-cited consensus for a 0.2% decline.
June's increase was revised down to 0.6% from 0.7%.
The ONS said non-store retailers partially recovered from declines in July, when sales were hit by promotions taking place earlier in June. Department store sales also picked up following stock availability issues in July.
Compared with a year earlier, retail sales volumes increased 2.4% in August.
Over the three months to August, sales volumes rose 0.9% compared with the three months to May and were 2.4% higher than in the same period a year earlier.
The ONS said non-store retailers benefited from a particularly strong June, while food stores performed well across the latest three-month period.
