(Alliance News) - European budget airlines Ryanair Holdings PLC and Wizz Air Holdings PLC on Thursday both reported strong increases in passenger traffic in June, though Wizz Air's load factor slipped marginally as it raised capacity rapidly.
Dublin-based Ryanair said it carried 21.2 million passengers last month, up 6.5% from 19.9 million a year before. It said the 21.2 million passengers was its largest monthly total ever, exceeding its previous record of 21.0 million in August last year.
Load factor on Ryanair's 116,800 flights in June was 95%, steady on a year before.
On a rolling 12-month basis, Ryanair carried 211.8 million passengers, up 4.5% from 202.6 million a year before. Load factor was steady at 94%.
Budapest-based Wizz Air said it carried 7.5 million passengers in June, up 27% from 5.9 million a year before. Capacity was increased by 28% to 8.1 million seats from 6.4 million, however, so load factor edged down to 91.9% from 92.1%.
Wizz Air also said it reached a milestone last month, flying 1,200 daily flights for the first time.
On a rolling 12-month basis, Wizz Air carried 74.0 million passengers, up 14% from 65.0 million a year before, with a 90.7% load factor, down from 91.2%.
Wizz Air reports its carbon emissions. This was reduced by 3.3% in June on the basis of grammes of carbon dioxide per passenger kilometre.
Ryanair shares were up 0.9% at EUR55.00 in Frankfurt early Thursday. Wizz Air was up 0.6% to 1,193.20 pence in London.
