(Alliance News) - The UK's gambling firms have agreed to significantly bolster funding and support to tackle addiction following pressure from the government and health chiefs, Sky News reported on Tuesday.
According to the news agency, the owners of Bet365, William Hill PLC, Sky Bet, Ladbrokes Coral and Paddy Power Betfair are to raise the levy they pay on gambling profit to 1% from 0.1% by 2023.
It is hoped that it will raise around GBP60 million annually, Sky News said. As part of their commitments over the next four years, the firms will cumulatively spend GBP100 million on addiction treatment and co-operate with health organisations to determine where support is most needed.
The extra funding follows criticism the current contribution dwarfs spending on marketing.
