PRESS: J Sainsbury starts search for next chair - Sky News

13th Jun 2026 12:52

(Alliance News) - J Sainsbury PLC has started a search for a new chair, Sky News reported on Saturday.

The London-based food retailer has instructed headhunters to find a successor to Martin Scicluna, who has held the post since 2019, Sky News reported.

Scicluna is expected to remain in place until a replacement is appointed.

Sky News said one source suggested that executive search firm MWM Consulting has been in the frame to run the search, but it is unclear whether it has won the contract.

Under corporate governance rules, Chair Scicluna would not be "timed out" until late 2027, the ninth anniversary of him joining the Sainsbury's board. Sky News reported that insiders said he could step down at the firm's annual meeting next year.

Among the main tasks for the next chair will be succession planning for Sainsbury's next chief executive. Simon Roberts has held the role since 2020, but Sky News said that there is no suggestion he is nearing the end of his tenure.

Shares in J Sainsbury closed up 1.3% at 313.80 pence on Friday in London. The stock has risen 9.4% over the last 12 months.
