(Alliance News) - BHP Group Ltd plans to cut 300 jobs at its iron ore operations in Western Australia as falling commodity prices and rising costs weigh on the business, Bloomberg reported on Wednesday.
The Melbourne-based miner will make redundancies at its South Flank, Mining Area C, Newman and Jimblebar mines in the Pilbara region, which employ around 16,000 people in total.
A BHP spokesperson said the company would explore alternative employment opportunities for affected workers.
Iron ore prices have fallen around 14% since the start of the year, while mining and shipping costs have increased, partly due to higher fuel prices linked to the conflict in the Middle East.
Shares in BHP were 0.3% higher at 3,202.00 pence in London on Wednesday afternoon.
