(Alliance News) - Barclays PLC is planning to restart its equity capital markets business in India after nearly a decade, Bloomberg reported Tuesday.
The London-based bank aims to compete for underwriting mandates amid a "strong" pipeline for initial public offerings, as investment banks earned a record USD417 million in IPO fees in India last year, Bloomberg said citing London Stock Exchange Group PLC.
Barclays could capitalise on a sharp rise in share sales in the busy Indian markets for fundraising.
Pramod Kumar, chief executive officer of Barclays India according to Bloomberg said: "That's one important product missing in our otherwise very strong wholesale banking offering."
He added that the company believes that India will offer a long-term opportunity for banks.
Reuters in early October reported that Indian companies raised around USD25.27 billion in the first half of fiscal 2027, a record, with equity fundraising surging 75% on-year in April-September, while average listing gains improved to 19% from 7%.
Barclays shares were 0.8% higher at 440.90 pence each on Tuesday afternoon in London.
