Metlen runs first waste fire at energy recovery facility in Cheshire

21st Aug 2026 12:31

(Alliance News) - Metlen Energy & Metals PLC on Friday said it has conducted the first firing of waste at the Protos energy recovery facility in Cheshire, northwest England.

The first fire marks the start of the facility's last phase of testing. Once fully operational, Protos will process 500,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste per year, generating up to 49.9 megawatts of electricity. Metlen estimates this is enough to power up to 90,000 homes.

Metlen is an Athens-based aluminium producer and electricity generator.

It said it faced time and cost challenges during the execution of the project but described the development as a "major milestone" for the facility.

Protos is being developed by Metlen for London-based Encyclis, a business specialised in generating energy from burning non-recycling waste.

Metlen shares were up 0.8% at EUR48.60 in London around midday.
