Metlen Energy invests EUR25 million in aluminium value chain

22nd Sep 2026 12:13

(Alliance News) - Metlen Energy & Metals PLC on Tuesday announced an investment which it deemed strategically significant.

The Athens-based aluminium producer and electricity generator said it is undertaking a new investment of around EUR25 million in EP.AL.ME, part of the metals sector's "integrated aluminium value chain".

EP.AL.ME is the largest secondary billet manufacturer in Greece, Metlen states on its website.

Metlen said the investment aims to enhance the use of recycled aluminium and further strengthen its role in the European aluminium industry.

The company said the investment will create "strong" synergies with the Aluminium of Greece plant, which Metlen operates. It has an annual production capacity of over 190,000 tonnes of aluminium.

Once fully developed, the project is anticipated to increase total production to more than 250,000 tonnes and improve profit margins.

"The connection with Aluminium of Greece plays a pivotal role in this approach. EP.AL.ME. serves as a hub for the collection, sorting and pre-processing of scrap, while Aluminium of Greece provides the production scale and metallurgical flexibility required to incorporate demanding recycled-metal streams into high-value products. The two facilities -one producing primary aluminium and the other secondary aluminium - therefore operate in a complementary manner as a single integrated production system," Metlen said.

It added that beyond the "significant technological upgrade, the investment forms part of Metlen's strategy to develop an even more vertically integrated and competitive production model. The objective is to use raw materials more efficiently, generate greater added value and strengthen the company’s international competitiveness."

Metlen Energy shares rose 1.4% to EUR48.26 each on Tuesday afternoon in London.
