(Alliance News) - Ireland's trade surplus widened sharply in April, boosted by a surging positive balance with the US, data published by the Central Statistics Office showed Wednesday.
The trade surplus grew by 34% to EUR4.88 billion in April from EUR3.63 billion in March.
Ireland's trade surplus with the US increased by 40% to EUR3.56 billion in April from EUR2.55 billion in March.
Irish exports to the US rose 15% to EUR5.15 billion in April from EUR4.48 billion in March, while imports from the US fell 18% to EUR1.59 billion from EUR1.93 billion.
Ireland's trade surplus with the EU narrowed by 0.4% to EUR2.76 billion in April from EUR2.77 billion in March, while its trade surplus with the UK was cut by 17% to EUR490 million in April from EUR590 million in March.
Ireland runs a trade deficit with the 'rest of the world'. However, this narrowed by 27% to EUR1.48 billion in April from EUR2.04 billion in March.
