(Alliance News) - IP Group PLC on Friday said its portfolio company Microbiotica Ltd raised funds as it aims to advance its drug candidate into phase 2 clinical development.
IP Group, a London-headquartered investor in science and technology, said Microbiotica raised GBP36 million in series C financing. The capital will support progressing MB310 into phase 2 clinical development for the treatment of ulcerative colitis.
This follows positive results from a phase 1b study, which met its primary and secondary endpoints and showed statistically significant improvements in clinical remission compared to placebo.
Microbiotica on its website states that MB310 is a "live biotherapeutic product comprising eight bacterial species associated with clinical benefit in ulcerative colitis when engrafted in the gut microbiome of patients following faecal microbiota transplant".
IP Group said it invested GBP4 million in the financing round to maintain its holding undiluted at 16.4%, worth GBP24.1 million.
The financing round which was led by British Business Bank. Other investors included Tencent Holdings Ltd, Cambridge Innovation Capital, Flerie Invest and Seventure Partners.
IP Group Chief Executive Officer Greg Smith said: "Microbiotica has made exciting progress in translating world-class microbiome science into potential new medicines for patients. The positive results from MB310 provide a strong foundation for its next stage of development, and we are pleased to increase our investment alongside a high-quality syndicate of investors. We look forward to supporting the team as it takes this highly innovative approach forward."
IP Group shares were down 0.6% to 70.80 pence each on Friday morning in London.
