(Alliance News) - Invinity Energy Systems PLC on Thursday said it is helping to develop a new micro-grid project as part of a consortium led by Indian Energy LLC, an entirely Native American-owned micro-grid developer in California.
Invinity is a London-based utility-grade energy storage manufacturer that produces batteries for the large-scale requirements of business networks.
The California Energy Commission's long-duration energy storage program will include Invinity's largest system to date, a 10 mega-watt hour vanadium flow battery.
The CEC approved project funding on October 12. Subject to the execution of a sales contract between Invinity and Indian Energy, it will be delivered to the Viejas Reservation in 2023.
The Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians is based in southern California, governed by a bi-level tribal government and organised under the terms of the Indian Reorganisation Act of 1934.
The purpose of the commission project is to provide the Viejas Band with a hybrid, non-lithium battery energy storage system.
In further news, Invinity said it was making progress on the delivery of batteries against its order backlog from previously announced sales contracts. Final assembly of batteries for the Yadlamalka project in Australia is in progress.
Invinity added that it is continuing to advance the joint development of its next-generation flow battery, "Project Mistral", with Gamesa Electric and Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy. Once commercially launched, Invinity expects Mistral to demonstrate the size, scale and economics needed for a compelling alternative to lithium batteries.
Chief Executive Officer Larry Zulch said the last few weeks had made visible the extent of Invinity's internal progress this year.
"We have been working for some time with the California Energy Commission and are looking forward to concluding the contract for what we expect at delivery will be North America's - and Invinity's - largest flow battery," he said.
Invinity shares were up 9.5% at 30.10 pence each in London on Thursday afternoon.
