IN BRIEF: Rio Tinto secures Aboriginal consent for Winu mine

Rio Tinto PLC and Ltd - London and Melbourne, Australia-based miner - Signs a project agreement with the Nyangumarta Warrarn Aboriginal Corp for the proposed Winu copper-gold mine in Western Australia's Great Sandy Desert, located in Nyangumarta country. With this new agreement, the Nyangumarta people have consented to the proposed Winu mine and its associated infrastructure "Building on the project planning agreement signed in 2023, the newly co-designed agreement sets out how Nyangumarta people and Rio Tinto will work together, and how Nyangumarta knowledge, priorities and perspectives will inform the ongoing planning and implementation of activities on country," Rio Tinto says. A final investment decision is yet to be made for the Winu project, which also remains subject to regulatory and other necessary approvals.
