IN BRIEF: HSBC starts USD1 billion share buyback and tenders for debt

HSBC Holdings PLC - London-based, Asia-focused universal bank - Plans to start on Thursday the USD1.00 billion share buyback announced with its interim results on Tuesday. The buyback will be run by BNP Paribas Financial Markets SNC, conducted in both London and Hong Kong, and completed by October 23. The repurchased shares will be cancelled. HSBC also had held its interim dividend steady on Tuesday at USD0.10 per share, as it reported a 23% increase in pretax profit for the six months that ended June 30.

HSBC also on Wednesday announces tender offers to repurchase up to USD5.00 billion of four series of 2028 debt notes that have a combined face value of USD8.60 billion. The tender launches on Wednesday and expire on Wednesday next week. It is being run by HSBC Bank PLC.

Current stock price: 1,527.00 pence, down 3.6% in London on Wednesday

12-month change: up 65%
