HSBC profit surges 32% in third quarter, plans USD1 billion buyback

27th Oct 2026 04:39

(Alliance News) - HSBC Holdings PLC on Tuesday maintained its dividend and announced a new share buyback programme after generating strong profit growth in the third quarter of 2026.

HSBC, an Asia-focused, London-based universal bank, said pretax profit jumped 32% to USD9.63 billion in the three months ended September 30 from USD7.30 billion in the same quarter a year earlier.

Diluted and basic earnings per share increased 46% to USD0.41 from USD0.28.

HSBC maintained its third quarter dividend at USD0.10 per share and announced plans to launch a new USD1 billion share buyback programme, which the bank aims to complete before the end of 2026.

Group Chief Executive Officer Georges Elhedery commented: "Our performance shows that in a more complex world clients continue to turn to us to navigate uncertainty and seize new opportunities.

"It also reflects consistent execution of our strategic priorities with pace, precision and discipline. As we simplify HSBC, we are creating greater capacity to invest, grow and deliver strong returns for our shareholders."

The bank reported net operating income of USD17.79 billion for the quarter, up 6.0% from USD16.78 billion a year prior.

Net interest income grew 6.0% to USD9.31 billion from USD8.78 billion, while net fee income rose 1.7% to USD3.57 billion from USD3.51 billion.

Total operating expenses excluding amortisation and impairment of intangible assets declined 13% to USD7.95 billion from USD9.12 billion.

At 13.9% on September 30, HSBC's common equity tier one ratio was down from 14.5% a year earlier and down from 14.1% at June 30.

"We remain confident in achieving the targets we set out in February 2026," HSBC said.

HSBC shares were trading 0.6% higher at HKD143.10 each in Hong Kong on Tuesday afternoon, while shares closed up 0.1% at 1,353.60 pence each in London on Monday.
