Hammerson picks outsider Gina Szymanski as chief financial officer

5th Oct 2026 08:06

(Alliance News) - Hammerson PLC said on Monday it has appointed Gina Szymanski as chief financial officer following a "thorough" search.

The London-based real estate investment trust focused on city-centre shopping centres expects Szymanski to take up her role and join the board no later than January 1, 2027.

Szymanski will replace Himanshu Raja, who retired on August 12. When Hammerson announced Raja's retirement late in April, Hammerson named Deputy CFO Richard Shaw as an interim CFO once Raja stepped down.

Szymanski joins Hammerson from AEW Capital Management, where she serves as global securities chief investment officer, based in Boston, Massachusetts. She will relocate to the UK before taking up her role with the real estate investment trust that has GBP4.8 billion assets under management.

Hammerson said Szymanski's appointment follows a "thorough" recruitment process, supported by an independent executive search firm.

"I am delighted to welcome Gina to Hammerson," Hammerson Chief Executive Officer Rob Wilkinson said, adding: "She brings a combination of deep sector expertise, capital markets insight and a strong track record of value creation."

"I am thrilled to be joining Hammerson at this point in its journey. Looking across the global real estate landscape, I am excited about the opportunities in the retail sector," Szymanski said.

Szymanski said he saw Hammerson as ahead of the curve, uniquely positioned operationally and financially to take advantage of those growth opportunities.
