(Alliance News) - GSK PLC on Tuesday said HIV treatment Cabenuva has met its primary endpoint in a phase 3 trial.
The London-based pharmaceuticals company said ViiV Healthcare’s long-acting HIV treatment Cabenuva, or cabotegravir plus rilpivirine (CAB + RPV LA), achieved superior viral suppression compared with daily oral therapy in people with viremia. ViiV is an HIV-focused pharmaceutical company majority-owned by GSK.
In the phase 3b CROWN study, GSK said, long-acting Cabenuva achieved superior rates of viral suppression compared with standard-of-care oral antiretroviral therapy in adults and adolescents living with HIV-1 who had detectable virus when they entered the trial.
GSK said these findings built on the LATITUDE study, which showed that the medication was superior to daily oral therapy in maintaining viral suppression among people with HIV who had achieved viral suppression on oral ART but had a history of adherence challenges.
The CROWN trial, it continued, addressed an evidence gap by evaluating direct initiation of the regimen in people who still had detectable virus when they entered the study and had no evidence of resistance to integrase inhibitors or non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors.
"People living with HIV who experience challenges achieving or maintaining viral suppression with daily oral therapy continue to face significant barriers to optimising care," said ViiV Chief Medical Officer Jean van Wyk. "The CROWN study was designed to address this important evidence gap.
"These findings add to the growing body of data around long-acting treatment with cabotegravir plus rilpivirine, and provide important insights into the potential role of this approach for treatment-experienced people living with HIV."
CAB + RPV LA is approved in the US and other regions as Cabenuva, and as Vocabria + Rekambys in the EU and Japan, to treat HIV-1 in adults and adolescents who are virologically suppressed on a stable antiretroviral regimen with no history of treatment failure and with no known or suspected resistance to either cabotegravir or rilpivirine.
GSK shares were down 0.7% at 1,747.00 pence on Tuesday afternoon in London.
