(Alliance News) - Cornish Metals PLC on Thursday said its second drill hole at the South Crofty tin project in Cornwall identified a new high-grade tungsten zone, high-grade copper mineralisation and previously unmodelled tin-bearing structures.
The Cornwall-focused mineral exploration and development company said the 1,131 metre second hole, SDD26_002, returned multiple high-grade tin intersections and a new tungsten zone of 8.58 metres at 1.41% tungsten, including 0.52 metres at 15.15% tungsten. A further 0.29 metres at 2.02% tungsten was identified on an adjacent structure.
The company identified high-grade copper mineralisation at shallower depths, including a 0.62-metre intersection at 6.59% copper.
Several intercepts fell outside the current mineral resource estimate, which Cornish Metals said demonstrated potential to expand the resource to the west, subject to further drilling.
Cornish Metals said tin remained its focus, with production guidance for South Crofty based on tin. It said it would assess the tungsten and copper results as part of its wider exploration programme.
Cornish Metals noted that China accounts for more than 80% of global mined tungsten supply and introduced export controls on tungsten products in February 2025.
South Crofty Chief Geologist Lauren Beverage commented: "The new high-grade tungsten zone was not what we were drilling for, but is a welcome addition. Grades of this scale are not often seen in tungsten exploration, and they come at a time when tungsten has become a strategically significant critical mineral in the Western world. The high-grade copper intercepts further enrich our picture of the wider mineralisation system at South Crofty. We will look at both carefully as our understanding of the deposit develops. Our focus remains firmly on tin, and these results give us a clear and exciting direction for the next phase of exploration."
Shares in Cornish Metals were up 4.9% to 107.00 pence per share on Thursday afternoon in London.
