(Alliance News) - Blencowe Resources PLC on Thursday noted promising test results using graphite from its Orom-Cross project in Uganda, which it sees supporting plans to grow in "higher value western markets".
The London-based mining company said tests of Orom-Cross material showed "superior performance across multiple battery technologies".
According to Blencowe: "These latest results further demonstrate the versatility of Orom-Cross graphite across military, grid energy storage, data centre and other advanced battery applications.'
Two US firms, Apollo Energy Systems Inc and American Energy Technologies, are working with Blencowe on a prototype to meet the military battery standards required by the US Defence Logistics Agency.
Assuming the prototype development goes to plan, Blencowe and its partners intend to start a US pilot production line, with a monthly target of 100 lead-acid cells.
Blencowe also noted that, based on the latest test results, it expects to see a higher-value market for about 30% of the end product from a beneficiation process, which will help make the most of waste material from its activities in Uganda.
The waste product will be used as a battery additive by Apollo.
Blencowe shares rose 1.3% to 8.00 pence each on Thursday afternoon in London, having surged 79% over the past year.
Chair Cameron Pearce commented: "This latest test programme with AETC and Apollo Energy opens another significant potential market opportunity for Orom-Cross graphite within the large lead-acid battery sector, demonstrating enhanced performance, higher capacity, greater charge acceptance and longer battery life.
This sets Orom-Cross apart and it means our graphite can add real value in a market that already consumes tens of thousands of tonnes of graphite each year and operates outside the Chinese supply chain."
Pearce added: "As we move the project towards first production, we will keep adding further options to our broader marketing strategy, particularly in higher value western markets. These results also continue to validate the quality of our product and demonstrate how Orom-Cross can successfully differentiate from peers in what it sells and to whom."
