(Alliance News) - Birmingham Airport has announced plans for a GBP2 billion expansion, which it said could create more than 50,000 new jobs and more than double passenger numbers.
The proposal, which is under an eight-week public consultation, sets out plans for "using existing runway capacity" and "enhancing passenger facilities" over the next 15 years.
The airport saw more than 13 million passengers last year and said the expansion could take it to around 30 million passengers annually by 2041.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander welcomed the proposal, which she said will be a "massive boost to the West Midlands" that unlocked investment and created thousands of local jobs.
Of the new jobs, 3,800 will be on site at the airport, according to the plans.
Nick Barton, chief executive at Birmingham Airport Ltd, said: "As Birmingham is the UK's second city, our future plans will help secure ongoing growth in the region, benefiting more people and businesses in the West Midlands with new jobs, better transport links and enhanced connectivity."
He added: "This level of ambition sends a strong signal of support and confidence in our airport and wider region.
"We have a laser light focus on delivering sustainable growth that supports regional prosperity, while responding responsibly to the environmental challenges."
Alexander said: "We're backing our aviation sector to continue growing, right across the country.
"Birmingham Airport's masterplan will be a massive boost to the West Midlands, unlocking investment and creating 50,000 well-paid local jobs to get people into employment.
"From the Midlands to the North and beyond, we're backing airport expansion that drives prosperity in every corner of Britain, whilst delivering cleaner flights with over GBP219 million invested in green fuels."
Mayor of the West Midlands Richard Parker backed the plans, adding: "This consultation gives local people and business owners a chance to have their say and help shape the airport's expansion so that it brings lasting benefits for our communities."
The first public consultation event will be on October 16 in Hampton in Arden, with members of the public also able to submit feedback online, by email and by post.
The first stage of the expansion could begin next year and include work on baggage facilities and additional aircraft stands, the airport said.
