(Alliance News) - AstraZeneca PLC on Wednesday said the EU approved Trixeo Aerosphere for the maintenance treatment of asthma.
The Cambridge, England-based pharmaceutical maker said the approval by the European Commission is for treating patients aged 12 years and older whose condition is not adequately controlled by dual inhaled therapy.
Trixeo is the first and only triple-combination therapy approved in the EU for patients in this age group regardless of their history of asthma exacerbations, according to AstraZeneca.
The approval is based on phase 3 Kalos and Logos trials, in which Trixeo demonstrates statistically significant improvements in lung function and a reduction in the annualised rate of severe asthma exacerbations compared with dual-combination therapies, the company said.
Ruud Dobber, president of AstraZeneca's BioPharmaceuticals business unit, said: "Today's approval in asthma builds on Trixeo's established role in improving outcomes in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. This means we can now bring the benefits of a single-inhaler triple-combination therapy to people aged 12 years and older in Europe whose asthma remains uncontrolled on dual inhaled therapy."
AstraZeneca shares were 0.4% lower at 12,620.00 pence each on Wednesday morning in London.
