Telit Wireless Solutions, Inc., the US-based mobile technology armof Telit Communications (AIM:TCM), and the Belgian automated meterreading (AMR) expert XEMEX today announced that XEMEX has selected oneof Telit's GSM/GPRS modules to be deployed in XEMEX's CrediTalk(R)Smart Meters. Telit's GE863-Quad module will enable CrediTalk(R) tocontinuously monitor data related to their customers' energy usage aswell as widen the utility company's portfolio of services. With thisdevelopment, Telit marks its continued commitment to the high-growthAMR market. £ The GE863 module from Telit will be deployed in XEMEX'sCrediTalk(R) units. These smart meters have been designed especiallyfor use in facility management and building technology. £ "After extensive testing of the various GSM modules, we found thatthe GE863-Quad from Telit matches best our technical requirements,"says Marc Coppens, CEO of XEMEX. £ With the pre-paid CrediTalk(R) application, energy companies canmonitor and analyze the customers' consumption habits. CrediTalk(R) isattached onto existing meters and provides additional functions andcommunication features. The GSM/GPRS-based communication systemenables constant communication between the meter and a centralreporting system. The GSM module assures permanent access to theusers' data without the need for additional smart cards or accesscodes. The CrediTalk(R) management application allows the meter to bemanaged from any remote location with the highest level ofreliability. £ CrediTalk(R)'s pre-payment facility enables consumers to managetheir transactions from home through an online feature. Misplaced orlost electricity bills will now become a thing of the past. Consumerscan use the meter's display or visit a website to retrieve detailedinformation about their electricity usage, which enables them toadjust their power consumption accordingly. £ "The manufacturing time and cost savings afforded by the GE863make it ideally suited for large-volume applications such asCrediTalk(R) developed by XEMEX," explains Roger Dewey, President andCEO of Telit Wireless Solutions, Inc. £ The GE863 is one of the world's only GSM/GPRS modules to boast theBGA (Ball Grid Array) assembly concept. Rapid assembly is thuspossible using the pick-and-place method, the same for standard SMDcomponents. The Telit-specific features EASY GPRS(R) and FTP made theelaborate data transfer requirements for this application simple todevelop. The module measures just 41.1 x 31.4 x 3.6 mm, weighs just 9grams, and can withstand extreme temperatures from -30 degrees C to+80 degrees C. £ With the continuing deregulation of European gas and electricitymarkets, competitive pressure is growing on public utilities. Theability to access detailed information on customers' usage habits isbecoming more and more important. Public utilities are also beingforced to differentiate themselves from their competitors throughadditional services. AMR gives these companies the opportunity tooffer such services. Companies and consumers can read meters remotelyand therefore measure consumption in real time. Remote readingpromotes greater flexibility in responding to customers' needs. AMRoffers much more than just new sources of revenue for publicutilities; it also reduces costs and makes the management of plantsand equipment easier and more streamlined. £ About Xemex £ The Belgian company Xemex NV was founded in 1996.
