Scottish & Southern Energy PLC07 June 2007 SCOTTISH AND SOUTHERN ENERGY PLC APPLICATION TO BUILD WIND FARM ON LEWIS Scottish and Southern Energy plc ("SSE") has submitted an application toScottish Ministers for consent to build a 205MW (megawatt) wind farm at Pairc onLewis in the Western Isles. It is the largest wind farm development for which SSE has ever sought consent. The application features a proposal for 57 turbines over an area ofapproximately 20 square kilometres and construction of the wind farm wouldrequirement investment by SSE currently estimated at around £200m. SSE's four operational wind farms have a total installed capacity of 162MW andit has consent for three other wind farm developments with a total installedcapacity of 74MW. It also has six other wind farm proposals at various stages inthe planning process. Ian Marchant, Chief Executive of SSE, said: "The Energy White Paper has confirmed that renewable energy has a key part toplay in reducing carbon emissions and contributing to security of supply bydiversifying the electricity mix and reducing the need for energy imports. Ourapplication to build a wind farm at Pairc follows five years of environmentaland technical studies and discussions with the local community and I amconfident that it will receive consent."
