Verizon Wireless Invests More Than $230 Million in 2006 to Enhance Pennsylvania Network

Verizon Wireless announced today it invested more than $230million in 2006 to enhance its digital network in Pennsylvania. Theenhancements included building new cell sites and upgrading existingcell sites, increasing coverage area and expanding the company'shigh-speed wireless broadband network to many new markets. £ "Network reliability is the No. 1 reason that customers choose andstay with Verizon Wireless," said Roger Tang,president-Ohio/Pennsylvania Region, Verizon Wireless. "Getting throughon the first try and maintaining a connection are important to ourcustomers. We continue to optimize our network so that it remainsdependable." £ Verizon Wireless has invested more than $1.25 billion over thepast six years on improvements to its network in Pennsylvania,including the following upgrades made in 2006: \* T-- Forty-eight new cell sites were activated in western and central Pennsylvania to improve network coverage and capacity, enabling more customers to use their phones concurrently to make calls; send and receive email and text, picture and video messages; and download games and ringtones while enjoying clearer reception and fewer dropped calls. -- Equipment on 255 existing cell sites throughout western and central Pennsylvania was upgraded. -- Forty-eight permanent backup generators were installed at western and central Pennsylvania cell sites to ensure network functionality during times of crisis. -- The company expanded its Evolution-Data Optimized (EV-DO) third-generation (3G) wide-area network to Armstrong, Avis, Carlisle, Castanea, Harrisburg, Hershey, Jersey Shore, Lamar, Lancaster, Lebanon, Linden, Linglestown, Lock Haven, Muncy, Nippenose, Palmyra, Pennsdale, South Williamsport Weigelstown, Williamsport, Woodward and York.
