Dwr Cymru Welsh Water target energy savings in water supply
Dwr Cymru Welsh Water has commissioned Tynemarch Systems to undertake a 6 month pilot of the MISER real-time, sub-daily pump and valve scheduling software, to identify the electricity and other operating cost savings that can be achieved, whilst maintaining security of supply.
The initial implementation of the system will be used to provide pump schedules and monitor the performance of the Heads of the Valley area comprising some 8 reservoirs and 5 sources.
MISER will take live information such as flows and reservoir levels from the Servelec SCOPE-X telemetry system to forecast demand over the following few days and then produce pump and valve control settings automatically to manage the water supply network night and day to meet customer demands, licences and other constraints at minimum cost.
A key benefit to Dwr Cymru Welsh Water is that MISER provides a holistic view of network operation and helps to control the flows through water treatment works, such as maintaining a steady flow where treatment is sensitive to flow fluctuations.
The system will also support Dwr Cymru Welsh Water in responding to routine maintenance and unplanned network events, to prevent or minimise any impact on customers. MISER can be used to provide operators with the most cost-effective strategy to recover from unplanned outages arising from equipment failure or pollution incidents for example.
A key feature of MISER is that it can optimise the operating costs of both medium-term operation (monthly) and long-term (yearly) resource utilisation (production planning) as well as short-term sub-daily pump and valve control.
Tynemarch will provide support and maintenance for the system which will be operated from the Dwr Cymru Welsh Water control room.
Dwr Cymru Welsh Water personnel will be trained to enable them to extend the MISER models to cover the remaining areas of the water supply system, with the support of the Tynemarch support desk, if needed.
