Appian Technology PLC10 October 2006 Appian Technology plc / Ticker: APN / Market: AIM / Sector: Technology 10th October 2006 Appian Technology plc ('Appian' or 'the Company') Trading Update Appian Technology plc, the AIM-traded provider of Automatic Number PlateRecognition systems ('ANPR') and traffic management products and solutions, ispleased to provide a pre-close trading update. It has been a year of significant progress for Appian with: • strong sales growth in the UK domestic market • increased international sales with growth in the US, Mexico, Canada, Middle East and Mediterranean • key strategic acquisition completed • equity fund raising achieved of £4.9 million before expenses The global market demand for ANPR products is at an embryonic stage and theDirectors believe the market has significant growth potential. It is driven bythe ongoing threat of terrorism, rising levels of crime and disorder,initiatives to increase policing efficiency and effectiveness and increasingemphasis on traffic management. In the UK, Appian has completed delivery of a number of fixed Talon ANPR systemsin the year to 30 September 2006, which protect critical national infrastructuretargets including a large number of ports, airports and railway stations. Inaddition, during the year to 30 September 2006 Appian has experienced asignificant increase in sales of mobile systems for use in police vehicles. Internationally, Appian is rapidly expanding into North America and recently wona contract with Houston Police Department to supply mobile ANPR systems. 18 USpolice departments now use Talon ANPR technology and trials are ongoing with anumber of other US metropolitan police departments. In Canada, Appian hascompleted delivery of an initial 10 mobile systems to the Royal Canadian MountedPolice and follow on orders are expected. Appian continues to grow in the Latin American market with further growthexpected. The Company has delivered a number of mobile ANPR systems to MexicoCity Police department and has received a follow on order for £100,000 for afixed ANPR system, which was installed in September 2006. In the Mediterranean and Middle East, Appian has a very strong pipeline ofprospects. Recently, the Company received a £500,000 order for a large fixedANPR system as part of a nationwide government monitoring initiative and won acontract in the United Arab Emirates to protect a number of luxury hotels.Additionally, its recent acquisition, Genesis UK Limited ("Genesis"), is a keymember of a consortium which, in September, was awarded the contract toimplement a congestion charge scheme for Valetta by the Maltese Government. In July 2006, the Company completed the acquisition of Genesis, a complementaryANPR business, and the integration process is well underway. Genesis, established in 1999, supplies the "Shark" range of ANPR productsincluding in-car and back office systems. As well as increasing its penetrationinto the security, traffic and commercial ANPR markets in the UK andinternationally, the acquisition also broadens Appian's ANPR technology andsupporting product offerings, benefiting all its divisions from sales andmarketing to research and development. Following the acquisition of Genesis, the enlarged group provides a completerange of high performance ANPR products for mobile, fixed and portable andhandheld ANPR applications. Appian and Genesis have recently tendered for andwon a framework contract to supply Sussex Constabulary with mobile and fixedANPR systems. Looking forward, the pipeline of new business prospects in the UK and worldwideis stronger than ever and the Directors believe that the current growth trendwill continue. Trading for the year ended 30 September 2006 is expected to be in line withmarket expectations.
