This awardrecognises excellence in a business formed within the last five yearsto commercially exploit a technical innovation, product, process or centre ofexpertise originally conceived within a university. The Engineer's Special Award for Outstanding Personal Achievement in technologyand innovation was presented to Professor Colin Caro of Imperial College,founder of technology companies Heliswirl Technologies and Veryan Medical inwhich Imperial Innovations' shareholding is 18.9% and 37.6% respectively. Thisaward recognises Caro's distinguished contribution to physiological and medicalresearch and, more recently, the wide range of potential engineeringapplications that have arisen from his work. Lontra, a start-up developing a new type of compressor and engine, which is inreceipt of ongoing incubation support from Imperial Innovations, was runner-upfor the Start-up and University Collaboration category. This category recognisesexcellence in such collaborations between a start-up business and a university.Imperial Innovations has a 19.6% shareholding in Lontra.
