Telit Wireless Solutions, Inc., the US-based m2m mobile technologyarm of Telit Communications (AIM:TCM) is unveiling the GE863-SIM, aninnovative module solution integrating Gemalto's "Embedded SIM"product, m2m card. The new quad-band module in the GE product range isthe result of close technological cooperation with Gemalto, the worldleader in digital security. £ This new module has been designed specifically for therequirements of m2m applications. Telit's customers stand to benefitfrom the SIM's enhanced reliability, as well as considerable costsavings and efficiency in the development and production of their m2msolutions. The first Telit GE863-SIM modules will be available fromOctober 2007. £ The GE863-SIM GSM/GPRS module is the first ever to feature theinnovative "m2m card" concept within an m2m card. Gemalto is the firstsupplier of these SIMs, which include m2m-specific features and areembedded directly into the module during manufacturing. Thiseliminates the need for manual SIM insertion and configuration, significantly reducing the related costs. £ "Gemalto is a world-wide leader in the development of SIM-basedsolutions and services and particularly active in the m2m market.Given the business opportunity of the m2m market, the choice of thetechnological partner quickly became strategic, and the name ofGemalto came across as obvious," says Roger Dewey, President & CEO ofTelit Wireless Solutions, Inc. £ The m2m card product developed by Gemalto is of particularimportance, since the SIMs used in the m2m sector need to meetstringent demands such as a 10-year service life; operatingtemperature range between -40 degrees C (-40 degrees F) and +85degrees C (185 degrees F) as well as vibration, shock, and humidityresistance. £ "In order to respond to m2m industry challenges, Gemalto isdeveloping a new long-life SIM card, with special m2m specificationsand Over-The-Air mechanisms. This new, more robust and immovable SIMwill reduce the logistics on behalf of the mobile network operators(MNOs) and reduce the cost of ownership for all players within thevalue chain," says Jean-Francois Schreiber, SVP of Gemalto OperatedServices. £ The new GE863-SIM has the same form factor and software interfacesas all the other modules in the GE863 product range. This means thatit can be integrated into existing customer designs with only minimaladaptations. The tried-and-tested BGA assembly concept (Ball GridArray) facilitates straightforward, cost-saving assembly without plugsor cables. With its small external dimensions, the GE863-SIM is alsoparticularly ideal for applications where a compact format is crucial. £ The GE863-SIM GSM/GPRS module, with its m2m card, which remainsunder full control and administration of the MNOs, is suitable for allm2m segments. The Automated Meter Reading (AMR) segment will greatlybenefit from the advantages of this new module due to the fact thatAMR applications require the SIM card to have a long service life and,in their standard form factor, are a common target of fraud and theft. £ The GE863-SIM also offers numerous opportunities for the MNO andthe mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) interested in entering therapidly growing m2m market. Operators of mobile network services willtherefore in the future not only be able to set up access to themobile networks, but also bundle hardware and services in a singleoffering. £ About Telit £ Telit is a leading global wireless technology company.
