Telit Communications Gains PTCRB Certification for Additional m2m Technology

16th Jan 2007 18:30

Telit Wireless Solutions, Inc., the US-based m2m mobile technologyarm of Telit Communications (AIM: TCM), today announced that itsGE863-QUAD module has been awarded PTCRB (PCS Type CertificationReview Board) certification. PTCRB certification is a regulatoryrequirement needed in order to sell GSM cellular communicationproducts in the North American market. This is Telit's fourth moduleto receive PTCRB certification in North America. £ The GE863-QUAD is a quad-band enabled module. Since it can be usedin the frequency ranges from 824 MHz to 1900 MHz, it can be usedanywhere in the world and is thus ideally suited for the Americanmarket. The module, which measures just 41.1 x 31.4 x 3.6 mm andweighs just 9 grams, is also extremely sturdy: it can withstandextreme temperatures from -30 degrees C to + 80 degrees C. TheGE863-QUAD is equipped with the unique Ball Grid Array (BGA) assemblyconcept. £ Telit Wireless Solutions, Inc. develops, produces and marketsGSM/GPRS modules and solutions for machine-to-machine (m2m)communication. Their technology provides the basis for machines, equipment or vehicles to interface with each other via mobilecommunications networks. With its low profile design and extendedtemperature range, the GE863-QUAD is the perfect platform for allcompact, medium and high-volume m2m applications and capable ofincorporating additional features like Jamming Detection, integratedTCP/IP protocol stack, and Easy Scan functionality. £ BGA is based on tiny solder balls placed on the underside of amodule which allows for direct mounting to the application circuitboard, without the need for plugs, cables, or connectors. The modulecan now be assembled using an automated pick-and-place assembly forstandard SMD components. This not only reduces material costs, butalso installation time and assembly costs. The board-to-board BGAmounting is extremely stable and reliable. Together, the compact shapeand reduced assembly costs are crucial advantages for use incost-sensitive applications, such as those for the consumer market. £ "This second certification is further proof that our modules arecapable of meeting the strictest standards in the industry," saidRoger Dewey, President and CEO of Telit Wireless Solutions, Inc. "Thisis just the next step for Telit Wireless Solutions as we look to bringour technology to the rapidly growing US m2m market." £ This seal of approval from the CTIA industry association ensuresthat the GE-863 Quad satisfies the requirements of the AmericanGSM/GPRS network standard. To receive certification, devices mustexhibit US-specific features such as Adaptive Multi Rate (AMR) and850/1900 MHz frequency bands. Testing is carried out by an accreditedtesting lab. £ There are at least ten times more machines, equipment, vehiclesand robots than there are humans in the world, creating a criticalneed to transfer information efficiently between machines or frommachines to humans. The relatively new m2m industry delivers increasedefficiency, time savings, improved customer orientation and greaterflexibility. £ About Telit Communications £ Telit is a leading global mobile communications technologycompany.
