Major Energy Company Selects Servelec Controls to Upgrade Drive Systems

Servelec Controls is proud to announce that we have been selected by the nuclear business of the UK's largest energy company (EDF Energy) to Design, implement, test and commission new drive systems at Torness and Heysham. These projects build upon Servelec Controls previous successful delivery of monitoring and control system projects across the EDF Energy fleet.

Replacement of Fuelling Machine Hoist Drive at Torness and Heysham

The purpose of this project is to provide an upgrade to the Fuelling Machine (FM) with a hoist drive system at Torness and Heysham 2 power stations.

The existing control systems date from the 1980s and are coming to the end of their operating life.

The new drive cubicles will be designed and manufactured to offer drop-in replacements to the existing units and will add further enhancements to improve all aspects of control and maintainability.

The solution uses a Siemens Sinamics DCM VSD and includes design, implementation and full functional testing including EMC and dynamic load testing.

Replacement of Stepper Motor with Servo Drive System at Torness

The purpose of this project is to replace an aging stepper motor and gear box arrangement with a modern servo drive and linear actuator.

The replacement system will interface with existing controls which will be modified to provide enhanced position monitoring.

The actuator controls the speed of the boiler feed pump and will be controlled using a Siemens S110 safety rated positioning drive.

EDF Energy owns and operates eight nuclear power stations in the UK, with a combined capacity of over 9 million megawatts, while the parent EDF Group operates nuclear sites in France and the United States. EDF Energy employs 15,000 people in the UK and supplies gas and electricity to around six million customer accounts.

Servelec Controls is part of Servelec Automation, a fully-owned subsidiary of the Servelec Group plc. The Servelec Group is a UK-based technology group, providing software, hardware and services to the UK healthcare, oil & gas, nuclear, power, utilities and broadcast sectors.
