Rosetta mission
SCISYS PLC ('SCISYS' or the 'Company'; AIM: SSY) - the supplier of bespoke software systems, IT based solutions and support services to the Media Broadcast, Space, Government and Defence and Environment sectors - is pleased to announce its participation in the European Space Agency (ESA) team responsible for the historical touchdown of the Rosetta mission's lander, Philae, on comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko on 12 November. Rosetta has proven to be a tremendous success and the landing of a manmade object on the surface of a comet moving at 55,000 km per hour around the sun has been a challenging engineering task.
The success of this risky mission, 500 million km distant from Earth, is recognition of ESA's courage in undertaking a historic mission and reinforces the expertise and capabilities of the European Space industry. As part of the industry supporting Rosetta, SCISYS has contributed directly to this mission by developing the mission control system (MCS), a mission critical software system used by the European Space Operations Centre (ESOC) to command the Rosetta spacecraft and process its telemetry. Since Rosetta's launch in 2004, SCISYS staff have evolved, supported and maintained the MCS contributing over 25 man years of effort in achieving this goal.
Dr. Horst Wulf, Divisional Director of Space for SCISYS, said:
"It was an honour to represent SCISYS at the landing event at ESOC in Darmstadt on 12 November and to watch the live operational activities in person. At least 15 SCISYS employees contributed to the Rosetta mission and we are all proud having been part of this historic success. For many of us Rosetta is a career defining moment and when the time is right to look back on our professional lives it will unquestionably be one of the highlights. For the SCISYS Space division this is one of the best references for being involved in future Space missions."
Klaus Heidrich, CEO of SCISYS, added:
"We are delighted that Philae has landed on Comet 67P and congratulate ESA, DLR and the entire team on their success. SCISYS prides itself on delivering mission critical systems to its clients and it is a delight to see these systems help our partners and clients to achieve something truly historical."
