Thomas Cook Group plc
SAle of egyptian and lebanese businesses
Thomas Cook Group plc announces today that it has sold 100% of the Thomas Cook Egypt and Thomas Cook Lebanon businesses to Yusuf Bin Ahmed Kanoo (Holdings) Co WLL of Bahrain for cash consideration of £6.5 million. Thomas Cook Egypt and Thomas Cook Lebanon offer outbound corporate and leisure travel to Egyptian and Lebanese customers, as well as foreign exchange services in Egypt and Lebanon. Thomas Cook Group plc will continue to offer its customers from other markets travel services to Egypt.
Harriet Green, Chief Executive, Thomas Cook Group plc said:
"I am pleased to report further progress on our rapid transformation of Thomas Cook. This sale will enable us to focus more of our capital and resources on our core businesses, supporting the delivery of profitable growth."
Notes to Editors
1. The transaction will be effected through the sale of Thomas Cook Overseas Limited, a UK company which trades in Egypt though its Thomas Cook Egypt branch, and Thomas Cook Lebanon SAL, a Lebanese company.
2. The transaction does not impact Thomas Cook Group's outbound programme for European customers who wish to travel to Egypt. Our outbound programme is unconnected to the businesses being divested.
3. The businesses being divested generated an operating profit of £0.9m in the 11 months ended 31 August 2013.
4. The Group expects to incur an exceptional non-cash loss on sale of £19.5m, principally due to the write off of goodwill. The loss will be provided for in the year ended 30 September 2013.
