AMEC PLC24 October 2006 AMEC plc 24 October 2006 AMEC JV appointed preferred bidder for £500m National Grid contract A joint-venture between AMEC, the international project management and servicescompany, Babcock International and Mott Macdonald, has been appointed byNational Grid as the preferred partner for the West Overhead Lines and CableAlliance, which will carry out the upgrade of overhead power lines andunderground cables across the western half of England and all of Wales over thenext five years. The contract will be worth £500 million (AMEC's share: £237.5 million) over aninitial five-year period, after which the contract may be extended for a furtherfive years. As part of National Grid's expenditure of up to £2.8billion on alliances toimprove the electricity transmission network, the joint venture's work willenable new infrastructure such as wind farms and other new electricitygeneration plant to be connected to the grid and will cover enhancement andreplacement of existing assets to ensure the safe and reliable operation of theelectricity network. "We are delighted to be extending our strong relationship with National Gridand look forward to working in partnership to deliver an upgraded transmissionnetwork that will bring significant benefits to our customer, the public and theUK economy," said Samir Brikho, chief executive of AMEC.
