INTERSERVE WINS ‚£55m HEALTH CONTRACTS IN WALES
Interserve, the services, maintenance and building group, has been awarded two health contracts in Wales worth ‚£55 million in aggregate. They are the ‚£45 million development of the Children's Hospital for Wales for the Cardiff and Vale NHS Trust, and the design and construction of the new flagship Primary Care Resource Centre at Baglan, Port Talbot, for Haven Health Properties (Port Talbot) Limited.
The Children's Hospital for Wales will provide dedicated surgical capacity and associated critical care services, a unified outpatient suite and support for the strategic development of paediatric services across Wales through enhanced opportunities for teaching, research and development. A new diagnostic suite will include the UK's first open paediatric scanner. The Noah's Ark Appeal, supported by the Welsh public, will raise funds for medical equipment.
The restricted nature of the site in Cardiff dictates that the project work will be carried out in two phases to meet the Trust's logistical requirements. Enabling works are anticipated to commence in March 2009, and completion in 2012.
This is the ninth award to Interserve in the Designed for Life: Building for Wales framework agreement set up by Welsh Health Estates to deliver 21st century healthcare to the people of Wales. Based on the development of long-term strategic partnerships and the active promotion of integrated supply chains, it began July 2006 and is scheduled to run for four years with a further two-year option. As a Supply Chain Partner Interserve undertakes design, healthcare planning, cost consultancy, services installation, construction design and management co-ordination, professional services consultancy and construction.
The Primary Care Resource Centre at Baglan, meanwhile, will offer state-of-the-art facilities for many of the town's GP, dental, social and Area Health Authority services. A dentistry training facility is also being incorporated, together with lettable areas for a cafĩ and pharmacy. The project is scheduled to be completed in August 2009.
"We welcome this opportunity to create a hospital that will act as a centre of excellence for paediatric care," said Adrian Ringrose, Interserve's Chief Executive. "Together with the primary care centre we are building for the people of Baglan, we believe these facilities will make a real difference to families in Wales."
