Telit Communications PLC24 August 2005 Press Release 24 August 2005 Telit Communications plc ("Telit" or "the Company") Telit announces MoU for new EU initiative Telit Communications plc (AIM:TCM), the global wireless communications developerand distributor, announces that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding("MoU") with the European Commission's Emergency Call ("eCall") initiative. Thepurpose of the MoU is to secure EU-wide commitment to creating an in-vehicleemergency call service to reduce the number of fatalities and accidents onEuropean roads. By 2009 the initiative will be fully implemented and the directive will requirethat all European vehicles are fitted with a standardised on-board emergencycall system. In the event of an accident the on-board eCall system will send analert signal to the ambulance, police and fire brigade services. The signal canbe sent either manually or automatically if the car flips over or the airbag isactivated. When activated the in-vehicle eCall system will establish a voiceconnection directly with the relevant Public Safety Answering Point ("PSAP"). Atthe same time, a minimum set of incident data ("MDS") will be sent to the eCalloperator receiving the voice call. Oozi Cats, Chief Executive of Telit, commented: "Telit understands the futureimportance of in-vehicle communications. An on-board GSM-based emergency callsystem can significantly shorten the time it takes emergency services to bedeployed. "Telit is able to contribute to this activity with its long-term experience incellular communication systems. The consequence of the eCall campaign is thatall cars sold from 2009 will be equipped with GPRS modules and Telit will be atthe forefront of the campaign and will be able to position itself as a keysupplier. "Telit believes, as a result of this campaign, there will be a marked increasein in-vehicle safety. This will not only make European roads safer but will alsobring commercial success for the parties involved." - Ends - For further information: Telit Communications plcOozi Cats, Chief Executive Tel: 00 39 040 419 2491 www.telit.com Media enquiries: AbchurchChris Lane / Katherine Murphy Tel: +44 (0) 20 7398 [email protected] www.abchurch-group.com Notes to Editors Telit Communications plc is a global business specialising in innovativecustomised mass production solutions for cellular communications.
