Smiths News PLC30 August 2007 Smiths News PLC Pre close Trading Update Smiths News PLC today issues a trading update ahead of its results for the fullyear ending 31 August 2007, which will be announced on 18 October 2007. Trading in the current year is in line with the Board's expectations. Total sales have increased year on year. The trend of newspaper cover priceincreases more than offsetting volume declines has continued. The magazinemarket has been more demanding, declining volumes in monthly magazines andreduced Partwork launches being offset by growth in weekly magazines andcontract gains. Management continues to drive service and efficiency at pace, with costsavings being delivered ahead of plan.
