PETERBOROUGH UPDATE
Construction of 90km network begins
Business sign ups surpass 400 in less than 12 weeks
CityFibre (CFHL.L), the company that owns, builds and operates fibre optic infrastructure, is pleased to announce that the number of businesses pre-registering on the Peterborough CORE metro fibre network has now surpassed 400, equating to more than 10% of all businesses in the city.
Moreover, CityFibre, via its local service provider partner Businesscoms, has already seen a dozen pre-registered businesses convert to being contracted customers, several months before the availability of services on the network.
Construction of the 90km network officially began with a formal ground-breaking ceremony on Wednesday 23rd April and will quickly progress across the city with the first services available to businesses by July this year. The "Gig Up Peterborough" pre-registration campaign began 12 weeks ago, and is enjoying an acceleration of registrations of interest in the wake of the ground-breaking ceremony.
Greg Mesch, CEO of CityFibre, remarked: "We're very proud to break ground on this exciting new project and extremely pleased with the strong response to date from the business community in Peterborough, with 10% of area businesses pre-registering interest in under three months, and a dozen committing to service contracts before the network is even constructed. This underscores the significant pent-up demand we see across the UK for gigabit connectivity over pure fibre connections, where the lack of credible supply is felt most keenly in the business community."
The Peterborough project, announced in November 2013, is being undertaken by CityFibre in partnership with Serco, IT services provider to the Peterborough City Council. The work is set to transform Peterborough into a Gigabit City over the coming year, beginning with the connection of 106 local council sites to gigabit connections.
