Emblaze Ltd ("Emblaze" or "the Company") Management Update Emblaze Files Claim Against Microsoft for Patent Infringement
Herzeliya, 23 October 2012: Emblaze Ltd. hereby informs that it has filed a complaint for patent infringement against Microsoft Corporation ("Microsoft"). The complaint asserts that Microsoft's IIS Smooth Streaming system infringes Emblaze's U.S. patent No. 6,389,473 for media streaming technology.
Microsoft has been using this technology to allow devices running on Windows 7 OS and Windows Phone 7 OS (and above) to view live streaming multimedia content; Microsoft has also been using the technology to provide the Windows Azure Media1 services (Cloud services).
The complaint was filed with the US District Court for the Northern District of California.
Emblaze has been developing media streaming technology for over a decade, using it already in a live video streaming broadcast from the White House during Easter, 1998.
Emblaze's Live Streaming technology allows users to send live or pre-recorded audio and video to other devices, saves on data traffic, does not require devoted streaming servers, and allows reliable streaming even through firewalls.
Emblaze has already filed a similar complaint against Apple Inc. ("Apple") for infringing the same Emblaze patent with Apple's HTTP Live Streaming Application used for Apple's iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad devices as well as in Apple's Mac OS.
Naftali Shani, Executive Chairman of Emblaze, said: "Emblaze has made substantial investment into research and development to build a rich portfolio of intellectual property over many years. While we are happy to license our technology to third parties, we will vigorously defend our rights and our competitive position".
