Lonrho joins the United Nations Global Compact
Lonrho Plc is pleased to announce that it has become a signatory of the UN Global Compact.
The UN Global Compact was proposed by the former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan at the World Economic Forum in 1999 and officially launched in 2000 at the UN Headquarters in New York. It is a strategic policy initiative for businesses that are committed to aligning their operations and strategies with ten universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption. By doing so, business, as a primary driver of globalisation, can help ensure that markets, commerce, technology and finance advance in ways that benefit economies and societies everywhere. With over 8,700 corporate participants and other stakeholders in over 135 countries the UN Global Compact has become the world's largest voluntary corporate responsibility initiative.
Each year Lonrho will report on the ways in which it follows these ten principles. Lonrho is delighted to have joined the UK Global Compact Network and has accepted an invitation to serve on its Advisory Group.
Geoffrey White, CEO of Lonrho plc commented:
"The Board is delighted to become a participant in the UN Global Compact. Through our commitment to the ten principles, and our own corporate responsibility values, we encourage all our subsidiaries throughout Africa to achieve greater social, environmental and local economic benefits - and encourage others within our sphere of influence to do the same."
