Groupe Eurotunnel: Channel Tunnel: First Phase of High Security Fencing Completed

20th Nov 2015 16:03

As a result of the substantial programme of investment implemented by, and with the support of the two governments, in line with their responsibilities for public safety, Groupe Eurotunnel (Paris:GET) is pleased that its site at Coquelles has now been restored to its habitual high level of protection.

For the past four weeks, the Channel Tunnel site in Coquelles, which carries nearly 400 trains per day (one train every four minutes), has been operating to its normal levels of security. The action plan initiated by Eurotunnel on 1 July included, amongst other measures, the installation of 37 kilometres of high security fencing, the tripling of security staff and increased coordination with SNCF Réseau to secure the freight yard at Calais-Fréthun.

Since then, attempted incursions have reduced to almost zero and there has been no disruption to services. Consequently, on Thursday 19 November 2015, Eurotunnel recorded its best operational performance for the year, with close to 6,800 trucks1 transported in both directions, despite the increased level of security controls.

This high level of security not only prevents migrants from putting themselves at risk on the railway, but has also enabled Eurotunnel and its staff to perform their primary function as an international transporter.

In order to guarantee a smooth crossing to transporters, industry and consumers alike in the future, Eurotunnel has engaged in a continuous review of the different means of security employed on its site.

Jacques Gounon, Chairman and Chief Executive of Groupe Eurotunnel SE stated: « I would like to pay special tribute to the work of the men and women who provide the security that keeps this vital artery for European industry, culture and tourism open »
