Flybrid KERS-equipped bus completes road testing with Arriva
and starts carrying passengers in Kent
Torotrak (LSE: TRK), a leading developer and supplier of variable drive transmission, engine boosting and energy recovery systems for vehicles that increase fuel efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions in vehicles, is pleased to announce that the first of the Flybrid KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) fitted Arriva StreetLite buses has gone into passenger carrying service in Gillingham, Kent.
The KERS-equipped Wrightbus StreetLite has passed stringent flywheel safety and roadworthiness testing, and has been approved for drivability by both customer Wrightbus and operator Arriva. The operational performance of the system will be monitored over the coming weeks with in-service data and driver feedback being collected.
Wrights Group Engineering Director, Brian Maybin, said, "We're pleased with the progress of this project, and the Torotrak engineers have been very supportive in getting the bus ready for service. Hopefully this will be the first of many, and we look forward to working with Torotrak in moving this technology towards production."
Steve Hughes, Torotrak's Chief Operating Officer said: "We have been pleased with our extensive testing and the performance of Flybrid KERS, delivered early this year to Arriva. Entering trials in public service marks an important milestone, where driver feedback will help our engineers optimise the system ahead of start of production".
