8 March, 2007 FINNAIR PLACES FIRST ORDER FOR ROLLS-ROYCE TRENT XWB
Rolls-Royce today announced that Finnair has become the first customer to select the Trent XWB to power its new fleet of 11 firm, plus four option, Airbus A350 XWB twinjets. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2014.
This announcement represents a conversion of the airline's original order for the
Trent 1700 on the previous version of the A350, plus engines for another two firm aircraft that Finnair has added to its purchase. The deal is worth around $600 million at list prices, including the original engine order.
The Trent XWB, which will offer a single power source for all variants of the A350 XWB, is currently the only engine available on the aircraft.
Jukka Hienonen, Chief Executive Officer at Finnair, said: "Our evaluation focused on operating costs and environmental impact as these are two key drivers of our business. The Trent XWB clearly achieves our targets on both these criteria and will play a vital role in our growth plans."
Nick Devall, Executive Vice President, Civil Large Engines at Rolls-Royce, added: "We're delighted that Finnair has chosen Rolls-Royce in the first engine order for the new A350 XWB. We're offering a solution that's specifically tailored to meet the needs of the aircraft, so it doesn't compromise performance and ensures the lowest operating costs for the A350 XWB."
The original deal was a first-time Trent order from Finnair.
NOTE TO EDITORS
1. The 75,000 - 95,000lb thrust Trent XWB is the sixth member of the
three-shaft Trent engine series and is being developed specifically for the
Airbus A350 XWB twinjet. It is available for deliveries from mid-2013 and
will be certificated at 95,000lbs from entry into service.
2. Final engine configuration and selection of technologies is scheduled to be
completed by mid-2008. The first Trent XWB will be ground tested in 2010. In 2011, the engine will make its maiden flight on a flying test bed, followed by airworthiness certification and first flight on the A350 XWB in 2012.
3. The Trent XWB will be the only engine specifically developed and fully
optimised for the 250-375 seat A350 XWB family and will utilise the latest
available technology at entry into service to give the best performance and
the lowest environmental impact.
4. By the time the Trent XWB enters service, Trent series engines will have
accumulated more than 75 million flying hours.
5. Finnair's links with Rolls-Royce date from the 1960s when its Caravelle
airliners were powered by the Avon engine. It has also operated
Dart-powered Fokker F27s. Finnair, one of the world's oldest operating
airlines, was established in 1923.
